As Americans prepare to celebrate the 125^th anniversary of Labor Day, their collective positive opinion of labor unions is at a near 50-year high, according to a Gallup survey released yesterday.

According to the poll, 64% of Americans approve of labor unions, marking the third straight year the approval rating has eclipsed 60%. Public opinion has changed dramatically since 2009, when public approval of unions dipped below 50% for the only time in more than 80 years of the measurement.

This year’s approval rating is the fourth highest in the past 50 years, coming as union members and working people across the country prepare to gather, barbecue and march to commemorate Labor Day, which was established 125 years ago by President Grover Cleveland.

According to the survey, 14% of Americans reside in a union household, and 10% of working adults are members of labor unions.
