On Day 7 of their historic strike, Oakland educators reached a tentative agreement that could end the work stoppage.

Following marathon bargaining sessions over the past couple days, Oakland Education Association (OEA) secured a tentative agreement that provides victories in all of their core demands: Lower class size, more student support services, a living wage for educators and a halt to school closures. The agreement came after seven days of energetic picket lines at all 86 school sites, massive rallies and raucous marches that captured the heart and support of the entire Oakland community.

“We will have a membership meeting Sunday to vote on our tentative agreement that will change education outcomes in Oakland,” OEA President Keith Brown announced to a massive crowd at La Escuelita Elementary School. “Thank you for keeping the lines strong for seven days! We have shown the world where we stand as Oakland educators! It is because of the power of the strike that we have pushed this district to finally say that students are at the center!”

OEA members have 24 hours to review and discuss the agreement before the ratification vote tomorrow. A majority of members must approve the contract for the strike to end.
