Oakland educators will be on strike tomorrow for lower class sizes, more student supports, a living wage for educators and a halt to school closures. The strike is a struggle against the chronic disinvestment in Oakland public education and a fight for the resources that 37,000 Oakland students deserve.

Oakland Education Association (OEA) and Oakland Unified School District met for negotiations today, with the district finally presenting a written counteroffer to the OEA Bargaining Team.

“The proposal from the district still does not address the essential needs of our students,” said OEA President Keith Brown. “We cannot feed the minds of our students while starving our schools of essential resources.”

Brown announced this afternoon at Skyline High School that both sides had left the bargaining table with the next negotiations session set for Friday at 9 a.m. The 3,000 brave educators of OEA will be on the picket lines at 86 school sites tomorrow at 6:30 a.m.

“This is a great moment in history,” Brown said. “Oakland educators united with parents, students and the community will stand together to make sure our students have the schools they deserve!”
