Event Description
This conference will capture the essence in CTA’s Mission Statement: to ensure that the dignity and civil rights of all children, youth, and adults are protected and to secure a more equitable and democratic society.
In 2024, this conference will take place in Los Angeles, CTA members will have access to dynamic speakers and interactive workshops that will provide them with a greater understanding of the issues of diversity, equity and social justice.
The theme for 2024 will be Lessons for Liberation: Critical Connections for Crucial Times. Our workshop sessions will cover this theme through the lens of the following categories:
- AWARENESS
Sessions in this category are for members starting their personal social and racial justice journey, in the early stages of joining the collective journey toward liberation, or those interested in a refresher.
- CAPACITY BUILDING
Sessions in this category are for members who regularly navigate the flow of traffic toward social justice, and wish to do so with more precision. Attendees will sharpen and enhance their skills for maneuvering different lanes; avoiding accidents and pile-ups; knowing when to slow down, stop or head forward; and pulling others along.
- ACTION
Sessions in this category are for members learning to organize, inspire collective action and/or build skills to cultivate the power of the collective. Attendees are interested in filling their car with passengers and learning more about collaboration, ally-ship, and con-conspiring with other members doing the work, but not as the only driver. These sessions are about working with others and applying the skills you’ve learned so far to take action.

Child care is available to Equity & Human Rights Conference attendees who are the primary caregivers of the child(ren) attending Camp CTA for children ages 6 months to 16 years. While you’re attending meetings, your children can enjoy their own Convention Camp, organized by ACCENT on Children’s Arrangements, Inc., a national company specializing in children’s activities. Camp CTA is a complete morning to early evening entertainment program packed with activities. *All children must be preregistered to ensure proper staffing levels. Children participate in age appropriate activities, including arts and crafts projects and active games, in a safe, nurturing, and educational environment. The high ratio of caregiver to child (1:2 for children 6 months-12 months, 1:3 for children 13 months-2 years, 1:5 for children 3-5 years, and 1:8 for children 6-16 years) ensures campers receive lots of personal attention. Featured Presenters
David B. Goldberg
CTA President
An educator for more than 25 years, CTA President David Goldberg has spent most of his career as a bilingual teacher at Murchison Elementary in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). In addition to English, he is fluent in both Spanish and sign language. Goldberg has a long history of union activism. He previously served as CTA Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer for four years each, as well as two three-year terms on the CTA Board of Directors. Goldberg also previously served as treasurer of United Teachers Los Angeles. He comes from a long line of Los Angeles educator union leaders—he was active in the UTLA strike of 2019 just as his mother “walked the line in 1989” as a UTLA strike captain and his grandmother did during the L.A. teachers strike in the 1970s. Goldberg is currently the lead on the Community Schools movement for CTA and is passionate about helping transform schools into places where families and students can be involved in a more democratic educational experience.
Dr. David Stovall
David Stovall, Ph.D. is a professor in the department of Black Studies and in the department of Criminology, Law & Justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). His scholarship investigates three areas 1) Critical Race Theory, 2) the relationship between housing and education, and 3) the intersection of race, place and school. In the attempt to bring theory to action, he works with community organizations and schools to address issues of equity, justice and abolishing the school/prison nexus. His work led him to become a member of the design team for the Greater Lawndale/Little Village School for Social Justice (SOJO), which opened in the Fall of 2005. Furthering his work with communities, students, and teachers, his work manifests itself in his involvement with the Peoples Education Movement, a collection of classroom teachers, community members, students and university professors in Chicago, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area who engage in collaborative community projects centered in creating relevant curriculum. In addition to his duties and responsibilities as a professor at UIC, he also served as a volunteer social studies teacher at the Greater Lawndale/Little Village School for Social Justice from 2005-2018.
